Study of interactions between organisms that contribute to crop cultivation under environmental stress

【FOOD】 Ohtsu Unit

  • Overview

The land suitable for crop production on the earth is limited. In order to support the world’s population, it is becoming more important to secure stable crop yields even under stressed environments with unfavorable climate, dryness, poor nutrient soil, and so on. To achieve this goal in a sustainable manner, it is necessary to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, and the use of microorganisms that promote the growth of plants is attracting attention as a solution.

In this study, we will analyze the mechanism of microorganisms that promote the growth of rice and soybean, which are important as food, and work toward their application. In analysis of the mechanisms, interaction of microorganisms existing in the soil as community, and the substances of microorganisms that bring about plant growth promotion will be clarified. In application, we will develop bio-fertilizers for practical use in Japan, countries of foreign researchers, and other countries.
