Evaluation of the interplay between oncological and cardiovascular diseases in veterinary medicine

【LIFE SCIENCE】 Hamabe Team

  • Overview

As companion animals are living longer, oncological and cardiovascular diseases are increasing in clinical practice, and in many cases, these diseases are occurring concurrently. In recent years, the importance of a new academic field of “onco-cardiology” has been increasing in human medicine because of the close relationship between oncological and cardiovascular diseases, however, it is still not well recognized in veterinary medicine. While factors known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in cancer patients include cardiotoxicity from anticancer drug therapy, recent studies have shown that heart failure is also associated with enhanced tumor growth, suggesting the existence of common risk factors and pathological processes in oncological and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between oncological and cardiovascular diseases in veterinary medicine, while exploring potential diagnostic and therapeutic avenues through proteomic analysis and evaluation of blood coagulation.
