【LIFE SCIENCE】 Inada Team
The GIR Inada Research Unit is developing disease-therapeutic molecules based on collagen degradation and metabolism through a Japanese-German-British research collaboration. Collagen is the large molecule and most abundant protein in living organisms and plays an important role as a component of tissues including skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and digestive organs. It is currently reported that abnormal degradation or improper assembly of collagen induces several diseases. Related diseases include cancer, osteoporosis, periodontal disease, and muscle atrophy, however, the metabolic mechanisms of these diseases remain unclear. Therefore, this research team conducts genetic analysis and degradation analysis of collagen molecules in diseases to establish a basis for the development of factors for disease prevention and treatment. The development of therapeutic factors based on research on collagen degradation and metabolism achieve to establish, it will be possible to apply these research results to all diseases related to collagen degradation. This research unit promotes international collaborative research with a view to industrial application to international medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and drugs.
