International Research Center for Dynamic Interfacial Mechanics

【LIFE SCIENCE】 Tagawa Unit

  • Overview

As a research base for the newly established academic field “Dynamic Interface Mechanics” by the representative (Tagawa) and the coordinator (Nagatsu), we will develop further research activities for the future field development. In this study, we will especially focus on “control technology” of dynamic interface mechanics, by combining the world-leading fluid dynamics and interfacial anisotropy measurement by Tagawa with the world-leading Viscous Fingering research by Nagatsu. The purpose of this project is to contribute to the development of new interdisciplinary research called “creation and deepening of research on chemical control of interfacial fluid dynamics using Viscous fingering”. Specifically, (1) a systematic investigation of changes in the viscosity and interfacial tension of the solution and of Viscous Fingering with liquid-liquid phase separation, and (2) the theory of Viscous Fingering with chemistry considering non-Newton fluid properties, and (3) quantification of changes in interfacial dynamics response (interfacial anisotropy) depending on the stress loading direction, and (4) development of a dynamic interfacial rheology measurement method during high-speed, large-deformation. From such experiments based on the chemical control theory and interfacial anisotropy measurement, we aim to systematize a dynamic interfacial mechanics that has never been seen before.
