| Title | "Impact of antibiotics on anammox-based systems treating anaerobic digestion effluent"
The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious global challenge, and wastewater containing antibiotics is recognized as one of the major pathways for its dissemination. In particular, anaerobic digestion effluent derived from livestock waste contains high concentrations of ammonia and residual antibiotics, requiring advanced treatment processes. This seminar first provides an overview of the current status of AMR and trends in antibiotic usage in livestock production. Next, the principles and microbiological basis of the partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) process, an energy-efficient nitrogen removal technology suitable for high-ammonia and low-organic-carbon wastewater, are introduced. The effects of antibiotics on anammox-based systems, including PN/A systems, are then systematically evaluated. Furthermore, the potential for antibiotic transformation products to impose additional stress on microbial communities and further complicate process performance is discussed. Finally, future research directions are presented, focusing on the integration of biofilm engineering, redox control, and meta-omics approaches. |
