| Title | "Zeuzera conferta shortened agarwood resin induction without compromising agarwood resin quality in Aquilaria Tree"
Agarwood resin is a highly precious forest product used in incense, perfumes, and medicine. However, natural agarwood induction needs 10-12 years on average with controversial yields. Here we inoculated larvae of Zeuzera conferta into ten-years old healthy Aquilaria trees and monitored for agarwood resin induction. After one year of inoculation the presence of volatile compounds in insect’s oral-aboral secretions (OAS), and microscopic examination of insect-inoculated agarwood (IAW) confirmed agawood resin formation. Furthermore, the GC-MS/MS analysis IAW extract confirmed the presence of major groups sesquiterpenes and chromones present in agarwood resin. Interestingly, the presence of miscellaneous compounds (40% of total including alcohols, acids, aldehydes, esters and amides) in IAW indicated the Zeuzera conferta-Aquilaria-endophyte association for terpene biosynthesis, the major constituent of agarwood. We will discuss these issues in the presentation. |
