Title "Domestic Robotics: Designing Agents for a Shared Future"

<Abstract>

This lecture presents the design approaches behind two domestic robotics projects addressing real-world challenges in human-robot interaction.
The iChores project develops household robots capable of understanding multimodal commands and offering explainable behaviors, aiming to enhance both task performance and user trust. We have conducted experiments with Polish research participants to better understand how users teach tasks and issue commands, enabling the development of improved multimodal command understanding systems.
The Social Plantroid v2.0 combines robotics and plant biology to create a plant-cyborg companion that supports and educates children in caring for plants, fostering engagement through social interaction. The robot has been designed in close proximity to its primary users (preschool aged children) who, through a series of workshops, actively engaged in the robot design process.
Through these case studies, we explore how involving end-users in the design process, embedding social awareness and explainability into robot design can improve integration into everyday human environments, contributing to a future where robots are collaborative partners rather than mere tools.
