Title "Spatial control of lignin composition and structure between cell wall layers and cell types in plants"

<Abstract>
Lignins are the second most abundant carbon biopolymer in the entire planet. They form essential components of plant cell walls, without which land plants could not grow nor survive. These heterophenolic molecules differ both between cell wall layers and between cell types by changing lignin unit chemistry, the position of these units along the polymer backbone and branch sequences as well as the type of linkage joining units together. Yet the mechanisms enabling different cell types and cell wall layer to perform such control of lignin structure remains unclear. These structural modifications enable lignins to change their molecular torsions and spatial folding as well as their interactions within and between lignin and/or non-lignin polymers in plant cell walls. These structural differences control the biophysical and biochemical properties of lignins by adjusting their wettability, recalcitrance to chemical and/or biological degradation, antioxidant activity as well as their biomechanics. Recently, the molecular mechanisms used by different plant cell types in the same plant tissue to adjust lignin unit chemistry as well as the type of linkage joining units together have been unraveled by the Pesquet team (SU, Sweden) in collaboration with the Kajita team (TUAT, Japan). The present seminar will highlight these recent discoveries by showing that different combinations of lignin oxidizing enzyme LACCASEs, which are differently embedded between the cell wall layers of each cell type and differ in substrate preference, together with the controlled transport rate of different lignin precursors to these cell wall enzymes combinedly regulate the differences in lignin structure and properties between cell wall layers and between cell types.
