Title "Bioinspired Structures and Materials: Design, Performance and Characterization"

<Abstract>
Biomimicry is the art of learning, imitating and adopting nature’s solution to solve complex engineering problems. Many technological advances are made through the inspiration from nature, ranging from structural applications such as lightweight honeycomb structure, king fisher-inspired high-speed train, whale fin-inspired wind turbine blade to functional applications, for example, gecko-inspired adhesives and lotus-inspired hydrophobic surfaces. In this talk, the principles, concept, design and applications of recent development in bioinspired structures and materials will be discussed. I will specifically focus on our group’s research work on hedgehog-inspired structure for impact protection, gecko-inspired pattern for composite adhesive joints, and horse-hoof-inspired structure for crack diversion. We employ a combined analytical, experimental and computational method in our research. Since there are already countless biomimetic applications being realized, the possibility for more is simply endless. The goal of this talk is to promote, encourage and inspire human imagination through the careful observation of biological models.

<Biography>
Dr. K.T. Tan is an associate professor in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron (UA), Ohio, USA. He joined the university as an assistant professor in 2014 and received promotion and indefinite tenure in 2020. He was a research scientist at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, Singapore in 2013-2014. He received his post-doctoral training in 2011-2013 at Purdue University, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Dr. Tan earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2011, and his B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Dr. Tan’s primary research interests and expertise lie in the field of advanced composite materials, mechanical metamaterials, and biomimetic structures. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Office of Naval Research (ONR), other government agencies and industrial partners. He has published over 130 research articles in major international conferences and top-tier peer-reviewed journals. He is also the recipient of multiple awards, including the American Society for Composites (ASC) Best Paper Award (2020), Faculty Research Committee Summer Fellowship (2019), Firestone Research Initiative Fellowship (2018), LaunchTown Entrepreneurship Award (2016), Best Poster Prize (6th International Conference on Fracture of Polymers, Composites and Adhesives, Switzerland, 2011), A*STAR International Fellowship (2011), Tokyo Metropolitan Government Scholarship (2008), NUS Research Scholarship (2006), etc. Most recently, he received the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitational Fellowship 2022-2023. Dr. Tan is being appointed as interim director at the National Center for Education and Research in Corrosion and Materials Performance (NCERCAMP). He also serves actively in the executive committee of ASC as recording secretary.
