Title "Engineering crops for a sustainable bioeconomy"

<Abstract>
The growing interest in the development of bioenergy, biochemicals, and biomaterials has elicited new strategies for optimizing the composition of lignocellulosic feedstocks. Plant biomass, which typically consists of polysaccharides and lignin, represents a source of fermentable sugars and aromatics for the production biofuels and bioproducts. Due to its rigid and hydrophobic properties, lignin plays important roles in plants but also poses hurdles to the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for bioenergy applications. Our lab at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has developed bioengineering approaches to lower lignin and modify its monomeric composition towards reducing biomass recalcitrance to enzymatic deconstruction. Using synthetic biology, these approaches aim at manipulating the shikimate and phenylpropanoid pathways that are involved in the synthesis of lignin monomers. Furthermore, these metabolic pathways can be harnessed for the in-planta production of valuable compounds such as platform chemicals and polymer precursors (e.g., protocatechuate, 4-hydroxybenzoate, muconate, 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylate, and beta-ketoadipate). I will present our current knowledge in lignin biosynthesis and describe the metabolic engineering approaches developed in plant model systems (Arabidopsis, tobacco) and potential dedicated bioenergy crops (switchgrass, sorghum, poplar) to concomitantly improve biomass properties for conversion into advanced bioproducts and enhance biomass value.
