Title | ◆"MT1-MMP: a major player in tissue homeostasis, tissue destruction, and cellular invasion "
Fibrillar collagen is a major structural protein in mammals, and its tissue levels are tightly regulated by its production and proteolytic degradation. If the production exceeds, tissue fibrosis will occur; if the degradation exceeds, tissue architecture will be destroyed. There are five collagen-degrading enzymes under neutral pH in humans, including MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-8, MMP-13, and MT1-MMP. Among them, MT1-MMP is the only type I transmembrane proteinase, and it degrades collagen and other substrates on the cell surface. Accumulating evidence suggests that MT1-MMP is a crucial enzyme regulating tissue homeostasis, tissue destruction, and cellular invasion in various pathophysiological conditions. In this seminar, the roles and regulations of MT1-MMP in these processes will be discussed. |
