Sex is not a unitary phenomenon. By this I mean that sex consists of different components that are cumulative and emergent in nature. 2. The functional associations among these components are not necessarily fundamental to sexuality. By this I mean that chromosomal sex does not always determine gonadal sex, gonadal sex does not always determine morphological sex, etc. What determines gonadal sex does not dictate sexuality. Gonadal sex does not equal sexuality. 3. There appears to be only one relationship among the many different components of sexuality that is constant in all vertebrates studied to date. That is, the development of the gamete depends upon the presence of sex steroid hormones (but note, the production and secretion of sex steroid hormones does not depend upon the presence or development of gametes). |
