Next Gen. Batteries for Carbon Neutral Society

【ENERGY】 Iwama Team

  • Overview

The goal of this research unit is to create next-generation post-lithium-ion batteries aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The developing landscape for lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion capacitors is rapidly expanding across the industry due to the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and climate change mitigation. Along with this, the unevenly distributed recourses of main raw materials for energy storage devices has become a national security issue, prompting a partial independence from the current oligopoly of lithium-ion-based devices. Against this backdrop, post-lithium-ion batteries utilizing abundant ions such as magnesium, potassium, sodium, and calcium are gaining attention both domestically and internationally. However, the situation is far from the level of practical application. For the breakthrough in the situation, we will apply our nanotechnology based on high-power storage devices (LIBs and supercapacitors), to develop a sustainable next-generation post-lithium-ion storage.
