We are now developing comprehensive detection system of pathogens of domestic and companion animals and are trying to discover novel viruses in these animals. One of our aims is discovery of ancient viruses. Recently, we succeeded to extract DNA from insects in ambers and analyzed the nucleotide sequences using high throughput sequencer. Our group studies the molecular biology and host cell-virus interactions of coronaviruses (CoVs). We are investigating how nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway recognized CoVs mRNAs and how nucleocapsid protein protects CoVs mRNAs from NMD. The data obtained from our studies will reveal the feasibility of novel strategies for attenuating CoVs through increased susceptibility to the NMD pathway. We are investigating the mechanism of viral recombination including CoV family to understand the viral revolution. Furthermore, we are also going to clarify the roles of non-structural proteins of CoVs to understand the mechanism of viral replication in the host cells. We think that these studies will make a great contribution to develop ant-SARS-CoV-2 medicine.
